Raymond Ward, president of Anderson America, Charlotte, NC, said woodworkers want affordable machinery that provides them maximum flexibility.

"Customers are looking for more complexity in the machining centers," Ward said. "Users want to be able to process as many slips as possible on the same unit without having to change to a new machine. CNC routers have been superseded by the CNC machining centers which offer vertical and horizontal drilling and sometimes cutting capabilities."

Ward said features such as larger capacity tool changes are also popular. "The quantity of tools you can store and the opportunity to use a variety makes the aggregate faster and more efficient. No one wants to waste time in tool changes. Software developments are a key to the new features. Customers want software that is flexible and easy to learn, and that allows them to integrate various software into one system."

Todd Herzog, president of Accu-Router Inc., Morrison, TN, agreed that woodworkers are demanding the same thing that manufacturers in other industries want: more speed. He pointed to an article he recently read in a metalworking trade magazine.

"The interesting thing is that their machine tool needs are the same as those of the North American woodworking industry," Herzog said. "They want the machines to run faster, resulting in lengthened spindle speeds and/or higher feed rates. The benefit with faster cycle times is higher productivity and faster output of material. If you pick up a metalworking magazine, every issue is geared for the machines to go faster. Woodworkers want that, too. Increasing speeds of the machinery creates a win-win situation because at higher speeds you have more production. The spindle goes faster and the cutting tool can go at a higher rate," Herzog said.

Nested-based manufacturing on CNC machining centers is catching on in the furniture and cabinet manufacturing sectors, in large part because of more user-friendly software.

Sales of CNC (computer numerically controlled) routing machines for nesting parts are increasing, particularly to smaller and medium-size companies, according to representatives of CNC router companies interviewed by Wood & Wood Products.

"We're selling three times as many nested-based applications as point-to-point machines," says Michael Cassel, CNC product manager at Holz-Her U.S. "Nested-based manufacturing is the most active part of the CNC market fight now. The difference is the software."

"Sales of CNC routers are approaching half of our total sales," says Bill Blackmon of Delmac Machinery Group, which sells the Busellato JET line. "When you consider that we only introduced our first nested-based manufacturing system five years ago, that's amazing growth."

"(Nested-based manufacturing) has become an extremely important and large part of our North American machines," says Craig Sexton of Biesse America. He says Biesse now offers nine different models of CNC routers designed with nested-based manufacturing in mind, with table sizes ranging from 4 feet by 10 feel up to 5 feet by 21 feet.

"Nested-based manufacturing is not new, but now it's hot," agrees Greg Hammersley, Weeke product manager at Stiles Machinery. He says that nested-based manufacturing is a huge and growing sector of the wood manufacturing market, and it's driving sales of CNC systems. "The key is the software, which is much easier to use now."

"Nesting saves material and money," says Ken Susnjara, CEO of Thermwood Corp., noting that it streamlines production, optimizes yields and saves on labor.

With regard to Clifford-Jacobs' other markets, mining is stable and "on a good growth path now," Ray said. But the aerospace market -- quite strong six months ago -- has slowed, as has the military market, he said.

For many years, Clifford-Jacobs has forged parts used in the Apache and Chinook helicopters and the F-22 joint strike fighters.

The last three years, the company has had increasing work on missile and tank programs, Ray said.

As for geographical demand for Clifford-Jacobs' products, "the bulk of our work is from Texas to Pennsylvania, but a lot of product is shipped to Europe and Mexico, and some of those markets are growing," Ray said.

Clifford-Jacobs was already hiring before it started gearing up for a second shift. More than 15 people were added to the first shift the last three months, Baker said, and some employees have been working 10-hour days, from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The mantra remains in 2008. A majority of its new orders are conversions from other processes to metalcasting. Piad looks for labor-intensive components as potential conversions and has successfully converted parts machined from bar stock, machined forgings, sand castings requiring significant secondary machining, welding assemblies, brazing assemblies and investment castings. Piad also has seen its aluminum bronzes replace steel weldments.

"By not only seeking casting buyers but competing with all other manufacturing processes, the market place has opened up significantly," Schweisthal said.

Open Market

In the early 1970s, Schweisthal traveled the U.S, giving seminars to design engineers to spread the word about Piad's capabilities. Now, independent sales agents act as the door opener, identifying potential conversion candidates based on their industry classification. They arrange technical sales seminars and plant tours to inform potential customers about the process. Once a conversion candidate is identified, an in-house product specialist determines how much added value Piad's process capabilities can give to the part. Labor-intensive parts are the best candidates. The goal is to optimize material usage and eliminate secondary operations.

"We develop our own market with these conversions," President Holger Schweisthal said. "We don't ask potential customers if they buy castings which we can make cheaper. This approach to the market helps us grow even in today's difficult economic climate."

When evaluating a request for quotation, Piad's product specialists determine whether the material a component is currently produced in can be replaced by one of the metalcaster's alloys. Piad's alloys are created specifically for its chili casting process and have narrow freezing ranges to accomodate fluidity and quick solidification.
